Once upon a time, when I was in college, I took a philosophy course. I’m a rather deep thinker and have a philosophical-inclined mind, so I enjoyed myself greatly. After all these years that class stands out vividly in my memory, and one paper I wrote shines within that memory. My paper was titled “Is all art beautiful?” My mind still spins around that. The short answer is yes, all art is beautiful. Every single thing on this planet is beautiful and every single thing is a work of art. You might disagree; perhaps you find something in particular rather awful in appearance or design, and then quite the opposite for another thing, but that is where the beauty lies, in the discovery of what is beautiful for you. Beauty, to me, is the simple recognition that there is so much to choose from within our awareness to define our own assumptions of beauty. My favorite quote: ”The voyage of discovery lies not in finding new landscapes, it lies in having new eyes.” Yeah, I was studying Proust back then, too.
This is my explanation for why I think my current photograph is beautiful.
